A Prophetic Lifestyle of Peace, Protection & Restoration
Sleep in Islam is not merely rest for the bodyāit is a spiritual practice when done according to the Sunnah of the Prophet ļ·ŗ. The Sunnah way of sleeping combines duŹæÄŹ¾, remembrance (dhikr), cleanliness, posture, and intention, making sleep a source of healing, protection, and reward.
In Tibb-e-Nabawi, proper sleep restores the body, calms the heart, and prepares the soul for worship.
Sleep With the Right Intention (Niyyah)
Before sleeping, a believer intends:
To rest the body for worship
To regain strength for the next day
To place oneself under Allahās protection
With intention, sleep becomes worship.
Sleep in a State of Purity (WuįøÅ«Ź¼)
The Prophet ļ·ŗ advised:
āWhen you go to bed, perform wuįøÅ«Ź¼ as you do for prayerā¦ā
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 6311)
Sleeping with wuįøÅ«Ź¼:
Protects from Shayį¹Än
Brings peace to the heart
Keeps one in remembrance of Allah
Even if wuįøÅ«Ź¼ is not obligatory, it is highly recommended (mustahabb).
Clean the Bed Before Sleeping
The Prophet ļ·ŗ said:
āWhen one of you goes to his bed, let him dust it with the inside of his garmentā¦ā
(Sunan Abi Dawud, 5050)
This Sunnah:
Removes harm
Promotes cleanliness
Shows attention to safety and hygiene
The Sunnah Sleeping Position
The Prophet ļ·ŗ loved to:
Sleep on the right side
Place the right hand under the cheek
Face the Qiblah when possible
This position:
Supports digestion
Benefits the heart
Calms the body
Sleeping on the stomach was discouraged by the Prophet ļ·ŗ.

Recite Qurāan & Dhikr Before Sleeping
From the Sunnah:
Recite Äyat al-KursÄ« (protection until morning)
Recite Surah Al-IkhlÄį¹£, Al-Falaq, An-NÄs
Blow lightly into the hands and wipe over the body
The Prophet ļ·ŗ never abandoned this practice.

This dhikr:
Brings peace
Strengthens the body
Is better than worldly comfort
Avoid Sleeping Immediately After Eating
From Tibb-e-Nabawi wisdom:
Sleeping immediately after heavy meals weakens digestion
A short gap before sleep preserves health
Moderation protects the body.

Sunnah Sleep & Health
The Sunnah way of sleeping:
Improves heart health
Calms the nervous system
Reduces anxiety
Protects the soul
Prepares the body for worship
Modern science confirms this Prophetic balance.
Spiritual Reflection
Sunnah sleep teaches us:
To surrender control to Allah
To remember death daily
To begin and end the day with dhikr
A believer sleeps with Allah on the tongue and heart.
Conclusion
The Sunnah way of sleeping is a complete nightly routine combining purity, remembrance, duŹæÄŹ¾, posture, and discipline. By sleeping with wuįøÅ«Ź¼, lying on the right side, reciting Qurāan, and placing our trust in Allah, even sleep becomes worship and protection.
Reviving this Sunnah revives peace, health, and faith.
